The Archangel Gabriel, Saint George and the Dragon, and the Lighthouse at Honfleur

Through the many images of the National Gallery of Art, I chose three works of art that peaked my interest:  The Archangel Gabriel, Saint George and the Dragon, and The Lighthouse at Honfleur.
The Archangel Gabriel - Masolino de Panical (1939)

Saint George and the Dragon - Rogier van der Weyden (1966)

The Lighthouse at Honfleur - Georges Sewrat (1983)

Instead of drawing images, I decided to print out the artwork that I chose and cut out images to have a better visual of where and how I wanted them placed.  The first sketch that I made below shows me as the angel holding my granddaughter, Bailey.  I did not cut the images exactly how I wanted them placed (with my head as the angel head and Bailey in the angels arms).  Instead, I kept the image of my head, upper body, and arms together to depict the message of me as the angel/guardian holding my angelic granddaughter looking at her with so much love and compassion. However, in the final draft, I would separate my head to replace the angel head more fluidly and place baby Bailey in the arms of the angel. The quote that I added, "The Love Between a Grandmother and Granddaughter is Forever." is in color to emphasize my love of the ocean and the depth of my love for my granddaughter.

In the second sketch below, I replaced the angel's head with an image of my grandmother.  She has always been my guardian angel and I pray to her when I need her support and love represented by the heart to carry me through the rough times and to protect me.  I added the quote, "The love of a Grandmother is eternal, even after she has left this world."

In the third sketch below, I chose the lighthouse (with its beacons of light) and the mermaid (which is my granddaughter's theme in her room at my house) as protectors of the sea.  The mermaid is looking dreamily and longingly at the man standing on the side of the ocean holding a bottle of wine wondering what it would be like to have legs and share her life with the handsome man (Brad Pitt).  The sign on the easel reads, "Dream big little mermaid." to go along with the theme. I also included a luxury cruise ship (to portray my love for traveling and for the ocean), starfish, shells, and pearls (my favorite).

In the fourth sketch below, I chose the lighthouse art work again and luxury cruise ship with the warm sun shining down and the dolphin jumping out of the water--all of which I love.  I also love horses because I had a pony at my grandfather's house on his farm.  I chose a picture of a couple wild horses and a picture of my grandfather giving me away at my last wedding.  There is also a row boat that brings back memories of fishing in my childhood.  The painting is done in little dots and soft colors causing the image to seam pixelated.

In the fifth sketch below, I chose the knight in shining armor (replacing Saint George's face with Brad Pitt again, of course) and a picture of me to replace the princess holding a bouquet of flowers; the heart tattoo on the horse symbolizes my love for my hero saving me from the dragon and for the horse he is riding.  I have always loved fantasy movies or books, so the dragon, knight, princess, and castle play into that fantasy world.

In the sixth and final sketch, I again chose the Saint George and the Dragon (fantasy world), but with an interesting twist.  I am Saint George, the independent and courageous woman, killing the dragon to protect my granddaughter who is the princess.  The rose tattoo on the horse symbolizes love, beauty, and strength.  This is my favorite sketch as it shows how my life's journey has evolved through the tragedies and triumphs of life.
